Dmitri Spiro was born to parents Carmine and Constantina, both Colonial marines. His father was a Colonel stationed at the Picon Fleet Shipyards and his mother has served as a gunnery sergeant on a handful of battlestars. He was raised instead by Cara, his father's mother, and a retired marine that had served in the first Cylon war. Dmitri was brought up in military school, but chose engineering instead of active service. He opted out of the Colonial Marine Corps when he reached university age and instead chose Colonial Fleet, to become a raptor pilot. He found he was more suited for the computer and technical end than flying, since he had no patience for slow, steady flights.

His parents were disappointed with his career path, but Dmitri learned from a young age that he was in it for himself. He was disgusted with his parents' lack of actually being parents and was astonished that their marriage lasted thirty years of separation.

For his first posting, Dmitri was assigned as an Electronic Countermeasures Officer. He found his niche there and continued to serve as an ECO throughout his time in Colonial Fleet.
